Hiking

Aegina island has a beautiful evergreen environment amongst the hills and the valleys. The ground physiology helped to that. The touring interest derived from the hiking trails of Aegina is important, because the visitor can combine the hiking with the study of the unique flora and fauna of the location, and the visitation of archaeological places and traditional villages.

The area is a location of antiquities, ancient monuments and traditional settlements, ideal place for hiking excursions, in between ancient trails, abandoned old settlements and unique picturesque vyzantine Churches. The island is ideal for visitors seeking alternate tourism forms.

A. PAHIA RAHI - ELAIONAS - DRAKOSOUVALA SFENTOURI - DRAKOSPITA - MOUNT ELLANIO - TAKSIARXES
The total route is approximately 10 klm. and of total time 5.30 hours,
is of medium difficulty after Drakosouvala.

We begin from Pahia Rahi, a traditional settlement overlloking the sea, with traditional stone houses. Before the Church of Agios Dionisios there is a wooden sign directing to Elaiona through a dirt path. After 30 minutes we reach Elaiona, a place of rare beauty. In the area there are old small Churches and many delapitated houses.

The name Elaionas derives from the many olive trees, centuries old, that exist there. The place is owned by the Monastery of Holy Mary Xrisoleontisa (Golden Lioness). These olive trees are dispersed in a place with rich flora and fauna and amongst the small Churches of Agia Kiriaki, Agios Georgios and Agia Triada with the old water tank, and another vyzantine water tank further.

Continuing south and 45 minutes later we reach Drakosouvala, a picturesque location with cisterns (souvala), where the waters were picked. The place has amazing view towards Perdika, islet Moni, Methana and Agistri island.

After Drakosouvala there are two paths. The one leads to Mount Ellanio and the other, west, to Sfentouri. We continue towards Sfentouri. During the road to reach Sfentouri we meet the Church of Agios Dimitrios and an old threshing floor. We meet also the small Church of Agios Nikolaos and later we reach the picturesque mountain village Sfentouri, in an altitude of 247 meters. It is an old rural and livestock settlement with interesting folklore elements and beautiful view towards the beaches Klima and Sarpa.

We take the other path towards Moun Ellanio. The trail descends and we reach the so called Dragon houses "drakospita", stone houses in the ground with large horizontal plates for roof, shelters for shepherds. From there we reach after 50 minutes the top of Mountain Ellanio, to the small Church of Analipsi, which celebrates 39 days after Easter. The view from the mountain is amazing overlooking the whole Argosaronic.

Descending the montain Ellanio we take the right path. After 45 minutes we reach location "Sfirixtres", where the mythology says that Aiakos built a Temple to Ellanios Zeus. Today there are remnants of a horizontal space where the Temple is said to have been built.

From the Church of Taksiarxes there we take the path that connects Anitsaio with Pahia Rahi, to finally reach Pahia Rahi after 15 minutes. The above route has got sign with red paint on rocks or tree trunks and wooden signs.
